Dominant Divas

With today being International Women’s Day, it seems fitting to do a write-up on the dominant divas of the WWE. From Chyna to Beth Phoenix, we have been treated to some exceptionally talented women over the years; and below is a run-down of some of the divas who have helped in the rise of ‘girl-power’ in the WWE.

Chyna

Ninth Wonder of the World

After first appearing on our screens way back in 1997 as an ‘over-excited’ (or crazed) fan choking Marlena, The Ninth Wonder of the World went on to dominate in the WWE for many years to come.

A true trailblazer in the business, Chyna wasn’t only dominant in the diva division. As a former two-time Intercontinental Champion, the first female entrant into both the Royal Rumble and King of the Ring and a former bodyguard to Triple H, this is one woman not to be messed with.

Unfortunately, personal reasons appeared to cause Chyna and the WWE to drift apart and eventually they did part company, but for many Chyna is the ulti
mate dominant female of the WWE.

Last night at Elimination Chamber, Tamina was able to push Beth Phoenix further than any other diva has managed for quite some time. In fact, after hitting the patented Superfly Splash, she came within a second of creating history, only for The Glamazon to kick-out and go on to retain her title, for now at least.

But it was Lady Snuka who was left holding her head high at the end of the night, knowing that she had finally arrived on the big stage, after a long, often frustrating, three year climb in the WWE.

The dominant diva from Samoa has had more heel-to-face/face-to-heel changes in her three year career than The Big Show. Often being used as a bad-gal one week, followed by good-gal the next, Tamina struggled to create a strong persona for herself throughout the majority of her WWE career.

However, after ditching JTG in December 2011 (just a month or so after joining forces with him), Tamina undertook one final face-turn and started feuding with Natalya (a.k.a. Miss Fart-Gag). The difference this time, the fans bought in to it. Ladies and Gentlemen, Tamina Sunka had finally arrived.

The past couple of months have seen Tamina go from mid-carder to main eventer in the diva division, once again another success story of a Diva who is both beautiful and powerful.

However, with the name Kharma constantly on the lips of the WWE Universe, the Samoan warrior will be aware that no matter how hard she found it to get to the top; she must now push on and go that extra step if we are to see a Samoan woman lifting the Diva’s title anytime soon.

That being said, nothing should be taken away from Tamina, who has worked so hard to reach the heights she has today, and in my opinion at least, long may she remain there.

Give Us More Divas

Diva matches have never been taken as seriously as their male counterparts, which is a damn shame in many cases when the divas are fantastic wrestlers (quick shout out to my future wife- Eve Torres).

Some of the most beautiful women in the world became WWE Diva’s and entered our hearts and minds in great matches. Michelle McCool, Trish Stratus, Ashley Massaro (a particular favourite of mine), Melina (what an entrance), Stacy Keibler, just to mention a few. Oh and how could I forget the one and only Mae Young!

And now we are subject to basically the same matches week in week out. For the past six months on Raw there have been four Divas. I’m sure there are many more backstage willing to volunteer, but only four. Kelly Kelly, Eve Torres, Beth Phoenix and Natalya. In one way or another, these women were involved in every single diva match. Perhaps with some interference from the Bella Twins, and now the Rihanna esque redhead Alicia Fox. I will even shamefully admit to becoming bored with this combination and skipping some diva matches. I know I’m a terrible person.

I’m not even sure that bringing back the Women’s Championship would do anything to help. The only thing I can hope for is that WWE would give other lesser known Divas a chance. I count no less than fourteen divas on the roster, yet some I haven’t seen on TV for at least a year. Before last weeks’ SmackDown, I was hoping the wonderful AJ was going to get a big push, but the only push she gained was from the Big Show.

So to sum it up, give more Diva’s a chance; that’s all I can say. I don’t want to be forced to skip matches due to Nexus-esque levels of boredom. Whether it means bringing back the diva search or simply introducing some new female superstars into matches, larger measures need to be taken to help revamp the Diva Division (and King bringing back his “We Want Puppies” gimmick couldn’t hurt either).

Last week I posted a blog on the tag team division being too much of the same thing and now the Tag-Team Championships have changed hands. I can only presume that WWE are reading my blog entries and directly taking advice from them. Or something like that.

Oh and one more thing. Ashley Massaro, Marry Me?

WWE is renowned for its fine-looking ladies employed on the show, past and present. From Ms Elizabeth to Melina, from Torrie Wilson to Trish Stratus, WWE has always got it spot on when recruiting their divas.

As we enter 2012, the female roster is still bulging with beauties such as Kelly Kelly, Eve Torres and Alicia Foxx to name but three. However, there is one lady in the WWE who doesn’t fit the mould of your average diva.

Her Name: Ms Vickie ‘Cougar’ Guerrero.

Vickie debuted in the WWE in 2005 alongside her late husband, Eddie Guerrero, and appeared as a loving wife, a little overweight but with the right intentions. Seven years, one wedding, one divorce, two tombstones and a hell-of-a-makeover later, and ‘The Cougar’ has been reborn.

Once an easy target for cheap one-liners, Vickie has done magnificently to lose well over 50lbs, and Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler’s once amusing puns are fast becoming futile.

The 43 year-old gets more airtime than any other diva on Monday Night Raw, as manager of her stable: Dolph Ziggler and Jack Swagger; and with her patented ‘Excuse Me’ howl, is the only woman in the show with a legitimate catchphrase (‘cry Kelly cry’ is about the best the rest can offer).

2012 could well be the year of The Cougar, with Ziggler looking likely to progress to big things in the near future, meaning Guerrero could well feature more and more on Raw to which I say, fantastic.

For too long only Michael Cole has been an admirer of Vickie, but in honesty she deserves a lot more plaudits going her way. What she may lack in in-ring ability she more than makes up for with passion, I don’t see any other divas provoking such a loud reaction from the crowd as she does.

 WWE define their divas as “Sexy, Smart and Powerful,” three things which sum up Guerrero, however on the WWE website, Vickie is not classed as a diva. So to conclude, I ask; if AJ, Tamina and Rosa Mendes can all be classed as divas on the site, surely there is room on that list for Ms Vickie ‘The Cougar’ Guerrero.
