Match Preview: CM Punk (c) vs Chris Jericho

By Bushwhacker Barker
Best in the World v Best in the World
Ever since the mysterious 1.2.12 vignettes were shown on Raw, there had been mutters on it being the returns of Goldberg, Brock Lesnar, Undertaker, Christian and even a debut for the “Icon” Sting of WCW and TNA fame. Yet what surprised us was that it actually hyped up the return of the “Ayatollah of Rock ‘n’ Rolla”. So when it turned out to be Y2J, boy was I surprised to see him and his light-up jacket.

Once he returned and showed off his “heelish” nature once more, ignoring the fans and refusing to speak, it was clear he was back to claim what was “rightfully” his; to be called the best in the world and feud with the current WWE Champ.
There was only one question that was on our lips, how would CM Punk vs. Y2J actually happen? Especially with it looking as if Dolph Ziggler was going to be CM Punk’s successor with the many matches they were wrestling together being highly rated.

So when the Royal Rumble was fast approaching, we all thought the inevitable was going to happen, Jericho would win and choose to face the “copycat” Punk at ‘Mania for the WWE Championship, but when Sheamus won, it once again threw me as to how this match would happen. Then after Elimination Chamber, where Y2J was knocked out by CM Punk and Punk retained, it was now near unavoidable that Y2J would find a way to face Punk for the title, and so it was when he won the Battle Royal to decide the number one contender for the WWE Title.

Now, Y2J has always been very articulate and smart with his words, so we all expected him to be spouting his usual promos of how he is better than all the “parasites” in the audience, and yes to an extent he has dropped some of these great promos, but he has also been delving into a world that is quite unfamiliar with him, mind games and cheap shots. Attacking Punk from behind on multiple occasions was half what we would expect from Jericho, but it doesn’t really help his claim to be “best in the world at what he does” as CM Punk says, he may be the best in the world at what he does, but Punk is claiming to be the best wrestler in the world.

So Jericho, reeling from this undeniable truth, took a very sinister turn, becoming pure evil, talking about CM Punk’s Straight Edge lifestyle, and how it has come to be, from talking about Punks’ dad and his problem with alcohol, to his sisters alleged drug use, all of which Punk denies. This is before proclaiming that Punk was born before his parents wed, so this made him the “Legal definition of a Bastard”.

The last Raw before “The Granddaddy of ‘Em All“ (Thank you J.R.) showed that Y2J was in fact well and truly camped in Punk’s mind, with an enraged Punk attacking Christian to the extent so that he is now out of Wrestlemania and thus showing a vicious side of which we have never seen.

So the question is: Who is the best in the world?

Well, in my opinion, these two are basically carbon copies of one another; they both have finishers that are submission manoeuvres (The walls of Jericho and the Anaconda Vice), and finishers that are a knee to the head in one way or another, with Jericho’s Codebreaker and Punk’s GTS.

They both utilise their feet well with kicks and use variations of bulldogs at some point in a match. Both are very technically gifted, yet also very good at using the ropes as a springboard, Punk uses a flying forearm and Jericho obviously has the lionsault.

But most of all both claim to be the best in the world!

Whatever the outcome of the match, it is clear that this match will be fast paced, very technical and may surprise a few people and be the best match of the night; obviously it is not going to be a dark horse, as we all know the calibre of the combatants in the match, but what we can say is expect fireworks and a dramatic finish to the match, perhaps with a little controversy along the way.
